Whats Does Email have to do with Marketing?

Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, websites, blogs, text messaging, etc… more than ever before businesses have a variety of options in marketing their products or services. But lets take a moment to look back at the little marketing technique that has since faded away from our minds. Email. A recent study shows that although email marketing appears to be a thing of the past, it is still a very effective way of getting word out to potential clients.
A few facts:

Stats for 2011 shows that email addresses get 3 permission- based emails a day, this has grown since 2009 which saw a total of 2 permission- based emails a day.

  • 83% of people check email first on a business day
  • 72% check 6 or more times per day
  • 88% of people check their email via a mobile device
  • 63% of those people check at least once a day

Its not faster than the speed of light, but it’s close. Remember the days before email? If you wanted to send out a letter you needed paper, a pen, an envelope, postage, take a trip to the post office and a 3 to 5 business day wait in order for a letter or postcard to reach its destination. Of course the wait time was much longer if that letter had to go through longer distances. These days your messages can go anywhere in the world in only seconds and you can receive a response seconds later. This is very convenient, and you no longer have to deal with the hassles of having the right writing materials and postage available, today all you need is internet connection and some form of email capable device, which nowadays could be anything.

It’s green. Emails don’t require paper or having to spend money on postage. In an increasing environmentally cautious world this is beneficial.

It’s the first and last thing people check. Many of us can be placed in this category. 83% of the population that uses email check their emails first thing in the morning every single day. 72% check their emails 6 or more times a day.

Consumer Preferred. Because of the things listed above, email is the most convenient method for many consumers. Through email you can filter out the junk mail from the mail you actually want and if consumers are customers of a certain business or product, they are more likely to hold onto and read email from that business.

Email has been around for over 40 years, since its introduction at MIT in 1965, to its integration in the social media connection. It has become a staple in our everyday life. And for somebody in marketing, understanding how to connect the effectiveness of emails with the distribution capabilities of social media is crucial.
