No Trick or Treat for Sugar Growers this Halloween
For the American Sugar Alliance, we produced an RNR about Halloween candy. Did you know that while this is one of the peak times of the year for candy sales, it’s not a great time to be a sugar grower? According to ASA economist Jack Roney, the average American family will spend $21 on candy this Halloween: “Of the 21-dollars each shopper will spend, only 62-cents will go to U.S. sugar producers. That’s not 62-cents of profit. That 62-cents has to cover the cost of purchasing the sugar beets and sugarcane, turning them into edible sugar and then shipping the final product to candy companies across the country.” The RNR included PitchPlus calls to sugar producing areas and also to states with members on the congressional Agriculture committees.
